Excluded: When You Don’t Have a Seat at the Table

You hear about it after the fact: an important meeting with key executives to discuss strategic priorities. Everyone who matters was there.

Everyone except you.

Your heart sinks as frustration, invalidation, and deflation set in. You ask yourself, “Why wasn’t I included?”

This painful experience is all too common for CX leaders striving to make an impact but finding themselves excluded from critical conversations. It’s not just about the meeting; it’s about what the exclusion represents.

Why does this happen?

Here are four key reasons:

  1. You haven’t earned their trust. Without trust, you’re seen as peripheral rather than essential. Ask yourself: What actions am I taking to build credibility and demonstrate reliability?

  2. You’re seen as wanting to be the hero, not the guide. Executives don’t need someone who swoops in to solve problems alone; they need a partner who empowers the organization. Ask yourself: Am I positioning myself as a collaborative guide rather than the hero?

  3. You lack a clear plan. Vague aspirations won’t resonate in a results-driven environment. Ask yourself: Do I have a well-defined CX roadmap that aligns with organizational goals?

  4. You haven’t proven the value. Without measurable outcomes, your efforts might seem expendable. Ask yourself: Am I quantifying the impact of CX on business success?

The key to overcoming these challenges is simple but powerful: earn trust, become the guide, build your roadmap, and prove the value. These aren’t just steps; they’re a transformation—for you and your organization. When you master these principles, you’re no longer waiting for a seat at the table; you’re actively creating your place there. You’ll go from being an outsider looking in - to a trusted partner shaping the future, recognized for the tangible value you bring.
